The Importance of Reducing Oxidative Stress

Antioxidants are compounds that neutralise free radicles in the body. Free radicles (or ‘oxidants’ are highly unstable molecules that can cause damage to cells and tissues when left unchecked. When this occurs, the state of oxidative stress ensues and places us at a higher risk for the development of various diseases. Antioxidants have the ability to bind to these oxidants and neutralise them to prevent damage.

Antioxidants are made within our body but are also found in abundance in our plant foods which have health promoting effects, just like our macronutrients and micronutrients - thus, these antioxidants are called ‘phytonutrients’. Polyphenols, carotenoids, phytoestrogens, bioflavonoids and catechins are all examples of different families of antioxidants that have unique healing abilities for certain parts of the body and are what give our plant foods their bright, vibrant colours.

To ensure that you eat a wide variety of antioxidants, it is recommended to eat a diet containing a wide variety of different colours. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, herbs, spices, tea and dark chocolate are all antioxidant rich foods.
