The Benefits of a Mediterranean Diet

Based on the traditional foods eaten throughout the temperate isles of the Mediterranean including Greece, Southern Italy and Spain, the Mediterranean diet has long been hailed as the perfect diet for promoting good health and longevity.

Key principles of this way of eating include:

  • High quality, cold-pressed olive oil used liberally.
  • Meals and snacks are based on vegetables, fruits and legumes. Meat is used to flavour dishes, with vegetables considered to be the main event.
  • Variety and vibrant colour is key.
  • Desserts are typically fruit based.
  • Strictly limited refined, processed junk foods.

Although it is called a “diet” the Mediterranean Diet is more of a style of eating for life, rather than a regimented diet. Instead, the diet is well evidenced for its health benefits, thought to be due to the high intake of vegetables, essential healthy fats, antioxidants and fibre.
